SEOUL, Dec. 10- The response of Americans to pleas
for Christmas packages to Korea has become so vast that the Army has
arranged for special shipment of the gifts under Operation Santa Claus.
Col. Vachel D. Whately, Eighth Army Civil Affairs
officer, announced today nine tons of packages marked "Santa
Claus, Army Eight" are already on their way to Korea. When
the ships arrive in Pusan, the presents will be transported to Seoul,
where they will be distributed tot he addressed units.
Under Operation Santa Claus, American outfits here
will receive directly packages shipped at Army expense and addressed
to them. The contents will be distributed under their supervision
to the many orphans and needy they are sponsoring.
