ABOARD USS ESTES—Christmas cheer prevailed
in Inchon’s largest orphanage recently when officers and men
of the amphibious force flagship USS Estes gave gifts and a traditional
American Christmas holiday celebration to 160 orphans. The smoke and
flying lead of the Inchon landing over a year ago was forgotten by
the children as they tried turkey, fruits and candies.
WEEKS AGO the enlisted recreation committee voted
to allow that funds from the ship’s recreation fund be used
for the children. The children are wards of the Inchon women’s
police department. The feast was prepared by the ship's cooks and
bakers in their spare time. Chief commissary ward Harold L. Cody,
USN, Dexter, Iowa, supervised the preparation of the spread, which
included baked ham, dressing, ice cream and cake.
