WITH 7TH TRANS MAJOR PORT-Given a boost
by a platoon of the 863d Transportation Port Company, 7th
Transportation Major Port, six units of the command donated over 1000
candy bars recently to awed and delighted children of a Korean orphanage.
Informed of the orphanage by Lt. Col. Howell P. Mercer, out port commander,
the 863d platoon quickly responded. M/Sgt. James R. Ellis, out port
first sergeant, contacted five other units that help make up the command,
and all six agreed to donate a week's supply of their gratuitous rations.
THE ORPHANAGE, which is sponsored by the Christian
Children's fund of Richmond, Va., was naturally overjoyed at the contribution.
The homeless children were google-eyed over the mountain of candy
bars that Colonel Mercer, Sergeant Ellis, Chaplain (Capt.) Joseph
Hodges and T/Sgt. Lavon Nuttal, of the Air Force passed out. The
orphanage, by its charter, is set up to give "devotion of absolute
love as parents." The spirit of the orphanage is the development
of character and the cultivation of that character based on the teachings
of the church.
Schooling is the predominant theme of the orphanage.
Mechanical trades are also taught, with cattle raising and textiles
being the chief trades.
