Located about ten miles out the East
Gate of Seoul was the compound of the Seoul Sanitarium and Hospital,
founded by Dr. George Rue of the Seventh Day Adventist church, with
the help of his wife, Grace Rue. When Seoul was finally once again in
UN hands the Rues added an orphanage to the other institutions that
they created on this campus.
The "mother" and leading light
in this operation was Grace Rue who, fifty years later, at age 93, came
to the dedication of the Korean War Children's Memorial in Bellingham
in July of 2003. Most of the photographs presented herewith were taken
by George F. Drake on his many visits to the orphanage in 1952 and 1953
to deliver packages of material received by GIs in his unit from family
and friends 'back home'.
